A recent study published in the Journal of Science concluded that farm-raised salmon had higher levels of cancer-causing agents like PCB’s and dioxin than salmon hauled from the open sea. The authors suggest that eating farmed salmon more than once a month could place adults at a higher risk of developing cancer.
As you consider the above, keep in mind that long standing research has also demonstrated unequivocally that salmon, rich in omega-3 fatty acids, protects us from heart disease and Alzheimer’s disease among other things.
Just like chocolate and alcohol before that, salmon is now the subject of contradictory science. My recommendation is to ask for wild salmon at restaurants and at the grocery store but certainly not to eliminate it from your diet until there is more clarity on these recent findings.
