Dirty Deeds at Cold Stone Creamery

Starting about 6-months ago, I noticed that my clients were recording Cold Stone Creamery in the “dirty deeds” section of their weekly food sheets. Cold Store Creamery is an up-and-coming West coast ice cream chain that custom mixes toppings into homemade ice cream on a frozen granite slab. I decided to do a little investigating to find out more. Here’s the skinny: Beware of how many toppings you chose! Except for the fruit, you can count on 100-170 calories for each mix-in and 160 calories for a waffle bowl or cone (leaps to 310 calories and 7 grams of saturated fat if dipped in chocolate and 390 calories if dipped and then coated with candy). As you can see, it’s very easy for things to get out of control. Here are a few tips on how to successfully navigate Cold Stone Creamery:
  • The non-fat/low fat-frozen yogurt has 220-230 calories for a small serving of sweat cream, cheesecake, chocolate or coffee flavors.
  • Some of the lower calorie toppings include: Kit Kat (100 calories), Heath Bar (110 calories), or gummi bears, york peppermint patties, or gumballs (all contain 120 calories per serving) -- Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups are the highest (190 calories) and Cookie Dough, Oreo Pie Crust, Toasted Coconut and Brownies are the second highest (180 calories).
  • The fruit mix-ins range from 0 – 80 calories. Strawberries, raspberries, pineapple chunks, blueberries, blackberries and maraschino cherries each contain less than 15 calories. Raisins and black cherries contain about 80 calories each.
  • Nuts can add the most calories - pistachios, sliced almonds, peanuts, and pecan pralines have at least 200 calories per serving.
  • Skip the Waffle Cone/Bowl
  • Order the Small (6 oz) Serving Size
The Cold Stone Creation that I recommend: Berry Berry Good (Like it/ 6 oz.)
