Plan ahead! I always recommend writing out a shopping list of the food items you need for the week before you go to the grocery store. This way, you’ll be more likely to pick up only the foods you need and cut down on impulse shopping on foods that are often unhealthy and expensive. Also, you will be less likely to have to run out for a quickie trip if you pre-plan all of the things you’ll need for the week ahead.
My Cheap Pick: Buy whole produce, not pre-cut or pre-washed to save money.
When you can, shop generic and in bulk! Buying the store’s brand items will always save you money. Whole Food’s 365 brand tastes great and is typically cheaper than other brands. Trader Joe’s carries fabulous dairy and nut products using their own Trader Joe’s label. If you have access to Costco, stock up on the basics in bulk. Buy large volumes of healthy food items including meat, poultry, beans, whole grains, and frozen vegetables which can be frozen in individual servings.
My Cheap Pick: Buy meat and poultry in bulk at Costco. I love Kirkland brand!
Never go food shopping when you’re hungry. If you’re hungry, grab a snack, before you walk out the door. This way, when you get to the store, the urge to want to eat everything in sight won’t be there. This will keep your hands off the items you don’t need or truly want and your mind, on the grocery list.
My Cheap Pick: Buy fruit from a fruit stand. I love getting 2 oranges for $1.
