Whether it’s a complicated cappuccino or just a good, strong cup of joe, many Americans can’t start their morning without having coffee. Recently, coffee retailers such as Starbucks and Dunkin’ Donuts have waged war with new ad campaigns and competitive price cuts. But what coffee retailer reigns supreme at Nu-Train? Read below to find out each of our favorite rival coffee shops and what to choose and lose at each joint. Good news is that there ARE healthy food and beverage options to have on-the-go (even on the road!).
Coffee Joint of Choice: STARBUCKS
Starbucks offers 20 beverage choices that are under 200 calories! (http://www.starbucks.com/retail/locator/default.aspx
Choose: Tall, Skinny Vanilla Latte (12oz)|90kcals, 12g sugar, 0g fat

Tip: Coffee may impair absorption of calcium in your body. Having skim milk in your coffee is a great way to get in some extra calcium. So in addition to that skinny latte, be sure to include other good sources of calcium in your diet like Greek yogurt and low-fat cheese.
Coffee Joint of Choice: DUNKIN’ DONUTS
Dunkin Donuts offers some healthy options on their DDSmart
Choose: Iced Coffee with Skim Milk, Small (16oz)|20kcals, 2g sugar, 0g fat
Lose: Coffee Coolatta with Cream, Small (16oz)|330kcals, 23g sugar, 23g fat
Choose: Egg White Veggie Flatbread|290kcals, 9g fat, 4g sugar
Lose: Reduced Fat Blueberry Muffin|450kcals, 10g fat, 45mg sugar
Tip: Beware of specialty coffee drinks with fancy flavors, syrups and whipped cream. They add both unnecessary sugar and fat to your diet and may spark sugar cravings later on in the day. Also, when it comes to choosing a food option at a coffee shop, don’t be fooled by a reduced-fat label. Foods containing less fat are often filled with added sugar and/or unhealthy additives to make it taste better.
Coffee Joint of Choice: TIM HORTONS
Although I may be biased, Tim Hortons serves the best affordable coffee around and it’s now offered in New York City! (http://www.timhortons.com/us/en/index.html
Choose: Small Coffee, Milk, Splenda (8oz)|24kcals, 2g sugar, 1g fat
Lose: Small French Vanilla (8oz)|240kcal, 31g sugar, 7g fat
Choose: 2 Honey Dip Timbits|120kcals, 8g sugar, 4g fat
Lose: Old Fashion Glazed Donut|320kcals, 22g sugar, 19g fat
Tip: Switch to herbal tea or decaf coffee in the afternoon even if you don’t have any sleeping problems. The caffeine in regular coffee can keep you up at night. Although decaf coffee still has some caffeine in it, it’s not nearly as much as regular coffee (approximately 5mg vs. 125mg).
