Oranges: nu-train’s super food pick of the month

I define super foods as those that keep your heart healthy and also fill your belly! In addition to their great taste, oranges are packed with nutrients like Vitamin C, fiber, folate, potassium, and anti-oxidants; all which help prevent heart disease and control high blood pressure. Oranges have also been found to aid in weight control.  According to a recent study conducted at the University of Sydney, an orange (compared to other foods similar in calories) will keep you feeling fuller longer and will decrease your body’s caloric demand at the next meal. In the study, subjects ate a variety of different snacks, all identical in caloric content, and reported how they felt afterwards. Those that ate oranges reported feeling the fullest for the longest and ate considerably less at their next meal compared to those that ate other snacks. Quick tips on how to get the most out of your orange:
  1. squeeze an orange over your salad as a low-calorie alternative for dressing
  2. Freeze fresh squeezed OJ in ice trays and use orange ice cubes to sweeten and cool a glass of water
  3. Blend the peel and add to a fruit smoothie
  4. Use the peel to add color and taste to baked goods
